While studying law in Bonn and Munich, Thomas Heilmann received a scholarship from the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (Scholarship Fund of the German People) and worked as a free-lance journalist for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Tagesthemen (daily TV news show) and numerous other publications. After completing his education with his legal bar exam he startet his own business which became one of Europe’s leading independent communication network. He served as a CEO and chairman of Scholz & Friends and its holding Commarco until 2008. Heilmann was also a co-founder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Aperto DIgital Services (today an IBM company), ampere AG (energy-broker), Media Holding Hamburg AG as well as Econa AG (venture capital firm). In 1998 he became guest professor at the Universität der Künste (College of Arts). Thomas Heilmann has been an active Business angel and investor in several internet companies, such as Mytoys, Xing and facebook. After being a board member for two years Thomas Heilmann was elected chairman of the board of the German Save the Children organization in 2011. In 2015 he was elected to become board member of Save the Children International, the largest independent child right organisation in the world. He also startet a carrer in politics. In January 2012 he became for five years senator for justice and consumer protection in Berlin. Since 2017 he is Member of Parliament (Deutscher Bundestag). He also holds several position in the party CDU. Heilmann lives with his wife and their four sons in Berlin.
